FAQs
Help, I'm totally new to this!
Henna is a plant that can be mixed into a paste and applied to skin, leaving a stain that lasts 1-2 weeks.
You can buy ready to use henna paste that we've mixed here in house. It's perishable, but will last 6 months if stored in the freezer.
You can also buy raw ingredients to mix your own.
We have both Ready to Use Henna Kits and DIY Henna Kits available with complete instructions on how to get started!
I was looking for that dark blue/black henna...
You're thinking of jagua! It's a plant, like henna, but it comes from the jagua fruit and stains your skin dark blue-black. Head over here for our jagua products.
Which henna powder should I buy?
We stock two varieties of henna powder. All henna powder comes from the same plant, lawsonia inermis but the texture can vary depending on the growing region.
Our most popular henna powder is Suraja, which is an organic henna grown in Rajasthan, India. It has more stretch to it, which many professionals prefer since it's better for some of the more advanced design techniques.
Jamila henna powder is grown in Pakistan. It has very little stretch, which works well for more "painterly" style designs and making dots.
Many artists like to blend the two powders to get the exact texture they prefer, so we have a Henna Duo set just for them!
Is your henna red or black?
All (real) henna comes from the same plant, lawsonia inermis, and stains the same reddish brown color. There's a very subtle tone difference between growing regions, with Rajasthani henna (Suraja) being slightly more reddish.
We don't stock any artificial/imitation henna products.
Will it show up on my skin?
Henna shows up beautifully on all skin tones! Keep in mind, henna grows in regions where skin tends to be more melanated.
Henna will have the greatest contrast on the hands and feet, especially on palms or soles.
If you want darker stains, check out our jagua! It's a different plant that stains ultra dark blue-black.
I want to mix my own, what do I need?
Our kits have everything you need, but if you just want the raw ingredients you'll need one 100g pack of henna powder and 1 oz of a "terp" essential oil.
Our recipe is included with every order, plus you can find it here!
...but I can't draw :(
So many people who say they can't draw find that they have a knack for it with henna & jagua! It's not the same as using a pen/pencil. If you're still unsure, we have Stencil Sets that will help you build confidence while you're learning. They are not stickers, instead they let you copy any design to skin that you can then trace over with the henna or jagua. So, while you're making a gorgeous design you're also practicing!
